Der in Argentinien geborene italienische Dirigent und Komponist Carlo Franci (18. Juli 1927 – 22. März 2019) war 40 Jahre lang (1974-2014) eng der Oper Frankfurt verbunden. Er hat mit seinen herausragenden Interpretationen die Geschichte des Hauses maßgeblich geprägt. Carlo Franci hat an allen großen Opernhäusern Italiens gearbeitet, Orchester wie das London Symphony Orchestra, das BBC Symphony Orchestra, die Wiener Philharmoniker, die Wiener Symphoniker sowie das Salzburger Mozarteum Orchester geleitet und zahlreiche Opernvorstellungen u.a. in Berlin, Hamburg, München, Wien, Madrid, Barcelona, Zürich, Tokio, Rio de Janeiro und Pretoria dirigiert. ln Pretoria war er von 1990 bis 1997 Chefdirigent des Transvaal Philharmonic Orchestra. An der Metropolitan Opera in New York stand er bei über 90 Vorstellungen am Pult, gastierte aber auch in anderen amerikanischen Städten wie Boston, Cleveland, Detroit und Dallas. Zahlreiche von Carlo Francis eigenen Kompositionen wurden u.a. an der Mailänder Scala, der Accademia di Santa Cecilia und im italienischen Rundfunk (RM) aufgeführt. Carlo Franci hat nicht nur an vielen Opernzentren der Welt (wie Wien, Berlin, Hamburg, die Scala, London und viele andere) ebenso wie zahlreiche Plattenaufnahmen bei den großen Firmen dirigiert, sondern er war auch ein wirklich bedeutender Komponist, namentlich von Filmmusiken. Viele sind heute vergessen, aber beispielhaft folgt hier eine Erinnerung an einen seiner in Italien höchst erfolgreichen „Sandalenfilm“, dessen Musik ein amerikanischer Filmkritiker nachstehend beurteilt:

We are releasing for the first time the complete edition CD of the OST by Carlo Franci for the film „The Invincible Gladiator“ (original title „Il gladiatore invincibile“)  of 1961.  Carlo Franci (Buenos Aires , July 18, 1927), also known under the pseudonym Francis Clark, studied in Rome with Goffredo Petrassi. He is an orchestra conductor and a composer for theatre productions. He did the music for many films during the 50s and 60s including: „Woe to the Vanquished Ones“, „79 A.D.“, „Goliath and the Rebel Slave“ and „The Secret Seven“.

For this film the composer wrote a symphonic score to describe the heroic endeavours, where dramatic and violent passages for the battle scenes are alternated with a romantic and nostalgic love theme which is gloriously reprised in the finale. Maestro Franci used a symphonic orchestra, dominated by powerful French horns. For the realization of our CD (total running time 68:48 minutes) we used the mono master tapes of the recording session which took place over half a century ago in 1961 and have been kept in good condition until now.

In the kingdom of Acaste the wicked Rabirio holds the fate of the government in the name of ten-year-old Dario who is heir to the throne. Recio, a gladiator, saves Rabirio’s life by killing the man who had attacked him. Recio is released and put in charge of the soldiers, who must defeat a gang of bandits hiding out in the mountains. Recio discovers that the bandits are actually patriots being led by Sira, Dario’s sister, and they are fighting against Rabirio’s oppression. Rabirio decides to get rid of Recio and little Dario (against Recio’s wishes), but he fails. The people rise up against Rabirio and he is executed.
